Glossary

The vocabulary of newly launched stores and online businesses

FisherLeads measures launch events: the day a store or business website actually goes live, verified, and dated. This glossary defines every term precisely so you can use and cite it without guessing. Each definition has its own link.

Newly launched is not newly detected, indexed or discovered

A launch is a verified, dated go live. Detection, indexing and discovery only describe when software first noticed an address. Measuring launches is a stronger claim than noticing domains, and it is what the rest of these definitions build on. See the full methodology.

Store launch

The moment a storefront goes live, open to the public and able to sell. A store launch is an event with a date, not a status inferred from a web address. How we date a launch.

Launch event

A single, dated, verified go live. The launch event is the unit FisherLeads measures: the day a storefront actually opened and was confirmed live, not the day a domain was registered or a crawler first noticed it.

Newly launched store

A store whose storefront went live recently and was independently verified live. Recency is measured from the launch event, not from when the domain was created. Newly launched Shopify stores.

Launch date

The day the storefront went live to the public. It is the third date in the timeline (registration, build, go live), and the one we record. It can differ from a WHOIS or domain age lookup, and both are correct. The launch timeline.

Newly registered domain

A web address created within the last few days, often shortened to NRD. It is a freshness signal about the domain only. Many newly registered domains never become a store, so an NRD is a candidate, not a launch.

Go live

The transition from a private or unbuilt site to a public, selling storefront. Go live is what turns a candidate into a verified launch.

Launch rate

How many stores or businesses launched in a segment over a period, for example new Shopify stores launched per day in the United States. Launch rate is the headline number in our reports. Launch reports.

Launch cohort

All the stores or businesses that launched in a given period, grouped together. A cohort has a fixed membership once its period closes, which is what makes monthly and daily archives stable to cite.

New ecommerce store

A newly launched online store on any ecommerce platform: Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix and others. The newness refers to the launch event, across platforms rather than one.

New online business

A newly launched business website, whether it sells products or offers services. This is the broadest unit: every new ecommerce store is a new online business, and so is a newly launched local or service company website.

Business website launch

A services or local business going live online for the first time, for example a new HVAC, roofing, cleaning or real estate company website. We track these as launches the same way we track stores.

Verified launch

A launch that was independently confirmed live, not inferred from a single signal. Verification is what separates a FisherLeads launch from a raw domain feed.

Discovery

Finding a candidate early from public signals such as newly registered domain feeds, certificate transparency and DNS fingerprints. Discovery precedes verification, and a candidate is not counted as launched on discovery alone. Discovery is not verification.

Launch signal

A public indicator used to find launch candidates early, for example a newly registered domain, a new certificate, or a platform fingerprint. A signal points at a possible launch; it does not confirm one.

First seen

The moment FisherLeads first observed the live storefront. For a store watched from a fresh domain, first seen is effectively the launch day.

Platform

The software a store runs on. FisherLeads detects more than 30 platforms at launch, from Shopify and WooCommerce to Wix, Squarespace, BigCommerce, OpenCart, PrestaShop, Ecwid, Shoplazza and many more, so every launch is counted against its real platform. Launches by platform.

Newly launched vs newly detected, indexed or discovered

Newly launched is a verified, dated go live. Newly detected, newly indexed and newly discovered are crawler terms about when software first noticed an address. FisherLeads measures launches, which is a stronger and more precise claim than merely noticing a domain.

See the launches, measured

These are not abstractions. Every day FisherLeads records the stores and business websites that went live, by platform, country and category.
